Christianity’s Dangerous Idea by Alister McGrath – A surprisingly pacy read for such an intense subject.

The Winter Book by Tove Jansson – Short stories for adults by the inventor of Moominland

River Cottage Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall – I cannot even begin to describe how good this book is, every recipe an absolute winner.

Reilly, Ace of Spies – This series was broadcast in 1983, I never actually heard of it before, it was recommended by a friend. Gripping stuff, excellent winter DVD fodder.

The Christmas Cake Chronicle – 2

Cream the butter and sugar

Add the egg

Dry ingredients

Fold them into the mixture

Add the fruit and some other yummy stuff

Mix it all together

Into the tin and wrap it up

And into the oven you go (140 degrees Celsius – 4.5 hours with no peeking for the first four hours)

The recipe is of course taken from The Blessed Delia. This is in fact the actual copy of Delia Smith’s Complete Cookery Course that I was given when I went to university (which I simply cannot accept was twenty-seven years ago, but that’s what the numbers say). The book is all dog-eared, the hard cover has fallen to bits, it’s dotted with strange cooking stains and I still refer to it at least weekly.

Currants

Sultanas

Glace Cherries

All the fruit mixed together

A generous dollop of brandy

And leave it all to soak overnight.

….or the significance of dates or any hokey stuff like that. But the 19th September does seems to want be a bit of a pushy, extrovert date in my life.

It’s my wedding anniversary and the anniversary of my Dad’s death. Which is a bit of an odd mix.

And I have a wedding to go to this afternoon (friends from church).

And it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Yarrrrrrr!
