Only five years old and unable to speak…..

….but he’s already got an eye for a pretty girl.

After church today T made what can only be described as an all-out assault on the affections of a friend’s six year old daughter. He walked up to her, tilted his head to one side to make eye contact (he’s 4 months younger than she is, but half a head taller), gazed eagerly into her eyes grinning all the while and wrapped her in a huge bear hug. And then he stayed there, right in her personal space, looking like the cat that had got the cream. He even started caressing her hair!!

The little girl, who knows T quite well and knows about his autism (at a 6-year old level), thought the whole thing was hilarious and gave him a lovely hug back. But after a couple of minutes she clearly wanted out, so she scarpered off and locked herself in the loo. And T calmly posted himself outside the locked door to wait for her. That went on for another five minutes.

The girl’s Mum and I had been standing on the sidelines wetting ourselves laughing, but in the end I escorted T to another part of the building and let the pursued one know that it was safe to come out.

It was all very funny and very cute, but a bit of a wake-up call for me as that kind of behaviour simply will not do when he’s a teenager. Arrgh!
