Mini half term

Is it just my kids who seem to have most of the next 10 days off school? Teacher training day today, then its Bank Holiday Monday, then two days at school, then the election, then another teacher training day!

It’s not fair!

S will probably get stacks of homework though. His SATs exams are the week after. His school take them very seriously (an urban school working very hard to compete with leafy suburban areas – doing a good job as well).

So, who should I vote for?

Time to talk politics.

First of all, what issues and principles are important to me in my decision? Well, while I admire and support the “Autism Counts” campaign, this one issue on it’s own is probably not going to be sufficient to give me my final choice. I’m cynical enough to think that none of the major parties will really do anything substantial about this. it jsut ain’t high enough up the radar.

Similarly, it’s not just about the economy, stupid. Maybe I just feel too secure in my own economic position, but there are other issues that concern me more than how the election will hit my pocket.

Next, the parties.

Well, Labour ought to have everything going for it. I do think they have a handle on the economy. I like their social policies (Sure Start, New Deal etc) I also supported the war in Iraq. But I am deeply, irrevocably pissed off about the proposals for identity cards and the detention of terrorist suspects without due process. They also need to lose their landslide.

Tories. Hmmm, best that can be said about their campaign is that they haven’t really given the BNP any room to breathe.

Liberal democrats Well, I wouldn’t trust them with the economy, but I really like a lot of their social policy ideas. They aren’t going to win the election of course, but it might not be a bad thing for them to increase their number of seats – to strengthen the conscience of government if you like.

RespectDunno enough about them

UKIP Umm, well I belive in the European Union, so that’s a bit of a deal breaker with this lot.

Veritas Kilroy Silk was on the radio ths afternoon. A nasty piece of work IMHO.

The final consideration of course is who are my local candidates. But i need to do some mroe research and think some more.

I am a zero star bible student

Well, I had a brilliant time at Capernwray – plenty of good solid teaching (based on Ephesians) and also lots of fun. You can’t really go wrong when you take 15 women away from all church and family responsibilities for 3 days, put them in a place which provides regular meals and has a swimming pool and sauna. Because our group was so large, they put us in the dormitory normally reserved for groups of naughty boys on youth camps – called the Zoo!

However, the weekend has brought me to reflect on how shoddily I approach my personal study and prayer life. How can i let everything else crowd out learning about God so easily. Time to reform.

How can someone so small take up so much space

Our 3-year old wakes usually once every other night around 2-3 am.

Sometimes it’s very horrid as it seems to be a nightmare that wakes him. He can’t talk yet so isn’t able to tell us what the problem is. So he screams, either until he falls asleep again (maybe 10 minutes) or until he wakes up properly and then needs to be persuaded to go to sleep again (hour or so).

But about half the time he just wakes up quietly, creeps into our room and stages a coup d’etat in our bed. It’s a nice king size bed, but I am continually amazed at the ability of a smallish body to take up so much space. Arms and legs fan out in all directions. The duvet becomes biologically attached to him and ceases to fulfil it’s proper purpose of keeping the two adults warm.

Perhaps we need to buy him a double bed of his own. Would also make a good trampoline.

A weekend at the Chalet School

oo-er, I’m off on a Ladies weekend here:

with a gang of women from my church. I’m not really used to doing girly things.

OK I was wrong. I must be a moaning minnie.

Turns out S wants to carry on with his archery. Which means that I get to as well. After we’ve joined the local club, we can just turn up at any of the 3 sessions in the week and will get coaching through the club as and when we want it. We can even use club bows for £1 a go, until we feel keen enough (and rich enough) to buy our own gear.

Which is not a cheap proposition. About £100 for S to get a junior bow plus a few essentials. But for me it would be £200-£250! Gulp.
